In less than 24 hours, Chinese New Year will be here, as well as Valentines Day. This year, two events are in the same day, 14th Feb. If you are celebrating Chinese New Year, the year of the Tiger, I wish you a year with roaring, with success, peace and prosperity. And I also wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day, hope you have a special day that filled with love, happiness and enjoyment. I will spend time with my parents and siblings together.
The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to “catch up” with the solar calendar, the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. This year, 2010, it falls the same day as Valentines Day.
Valentine’s Day, on the other hand, according Wikipedia, “It is an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).”
