The Process of Build Your Own Website

On the other day, I got an email from one of my newsletter subscriber Lisa, she said she is a very new comer toward to those internet stuff; there are too wide range of materials, methods, requirements and programming languages.

She find it very difficult for her to understand, also looking at web sites and home pages is the first time for her, so in order to help Lisa and others who face the similar issues, I think it will be a good idea for me to summaries the concept of having your own site from the beginning.

First, if all you do now is surf the Internet then you already have a web browser, if not, then you need to either get one like FireFox or use the default one in your computer, that is Internet Explorer.

Secondly, to do business on the Internet, you need some kind of Internet connection to connect to the Web. This happens via an Internet service provider (ISP). The company you call from your computer to gain access to the Internet.

Your Internet connection options may include telephone or cable modem or DSL. Personally, I prefer cable modem or DSL because they are fast connections. You can consult with your local ISP first and then make a decision on the connection choose.

During your ISP search, do not forget look at Bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of available connectivity to the local Internet and World Wide Web.

At any given time, the total number of connected users shares the available bandwidth, typically measured in bits per second. The typical dial up modem, for example, supports up to 56 kbps or kilo (thousands) bits per second. Average ADSL connection supports 256k, 512k, 1G (millions) speeds. This is all you need to access other people’s web sites.

In order to have your own web site you need to get a domain name first. You can register a domain name at GoDaddy.com, They have been around for a while, and they have top-notch customer service and their registration service is the least expensive.

After that, you need to find a web hosting service. These services range from simple and free, up to full e-commerce and payment gateway support and the use of high-level database systems. A web host’s average price is around $17.00 per month.

Some of them are offer higher price with have extra benefits provided, and some of them are offer lower price that will be adequate.

Speaking of build your own website, you can use the web site builder wizards that provided by some hosting companies, use a product like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver or code your home pages by using a text editor and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) “the primary language” that World Wide Web documents are created in.

There are also have some complex programming approaches you can use to build your own website, such as JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets for local pages or server based technologies like .NET or PHP.

You can use different type of technology to build your site, but no matter what technology you are going to use, there is a normal process have to follow, which is you request to see a web page, and a server builds that page and sends it to your computer and browser in the form of HTML. You can try any web page, right click on it and then select View Source or View Page Source (depending on your browser) then you will see the HTML code.

When the HTML code displayed, you will see there is a page of text and a series of what called tags. This is what your browser interprets and displays as the nicely ordered screen you are viewing when you browse.

In addition, to create a good web site you need some design skills and some basic programming or logical page construction skills.

If you want to create a basic website, you do not need to have a programming skill; many web site builders cover much of what people want to do. Some of them have more advanced tools that let you build some very complex applications and sites, you can find those applications at How to Build a Website.

Speaking of web action, for example, the graphic designer builds pictures, buttons and then cut it into HTML, when you click on the pictures or some animation buttons, it will lead you to a different web page. These linking actions called hyperlinks and you will find them in almost all web pages.

Hyperlinks have different forms; the simplest one on a web page is comprise blue underlined text. However, they can also be buttons or pictures. You can see your mouse cursor change to a hand when your cursor is over a link, once you left click on it, it will take you to somewhere else.

You can build one or more web pages, link them together and put them on a web server. Then link to your hosting account and then linked your pages to your own account (you own domain name). Then your pages are viewable by everyone on the World Wide Web.
