Tip #1: Search Engine Friendly URLs

Many search engines reject URLs that include a question mark (?), which means, like Google, will not index any pages that have a question mark or other character (like an ampersand or equals sign) in the URL. The question mark means that dynamic content is being called and populated within the web page, usually before it is even displayed. A typical ?’ed URL looks like this:

example.com/page.php?id=about&section=me

So always use search engine friendly URLs, don’t use of a query string and also be sure to use the keywords related to your niche when you’re naming your urls.

Tip #2: Keyword Research

It’s important to do keyword research before deciding what keywords you’ll focus on when optimizing your website, because search engines will decide to rank your website mainly based on the keywords that your site associated with. If you cannot assess the level of competition in your market, how much demand a keyword has and so on, you will not succeed.

Keyword Research is the term for identifying the keywords that are most relevant to the subject at hand. You also make use of keyword research to identify the exact words that your customer is searching for (which may be different from what you may use).

When you do keyword research you understand what people search on and hence use the correct words in your copy. You drive more traffic to your website by coming up more often for searches. When you become more relevant, your website achieves better ranking.

Tip #3: Site Map

A sitemap is basically the “public” floor plan of your website. Also, it can effect your crawl rate, a site with 100 subpages, and only 10 of them are index and follow will have better rankings then a sloppy 90 follow and 10 no follow.

So always create a site map for your site and submit it by using Google’s webmaster tools. Google spiders your site and stores pages it thinks are important in it’s (huge) database. With a sitemap you can list all pages you think are relevant and even prioritize them.

A site map will allow the search engines to easily find all the pages within your website.

Tip #4: Meta Description

Other than the title tag, you can also use meta tag description tag in HTML – it is 160 character snippet used to summarize a web page’s content. Sometimes search engines use these snippets in search results to let visitors know what a page is about before they click on it. Google actually pulls your meta tag description when spidering your website so it’s very important that you have a well written and keyword rich meta tag description.

However, in regarding to whether the meta description count for rankings or not, Learn SEO series, SEOmoz says;

“Meta description tags, while not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from search engine result pages (SERPs). These short paragraphs are webmasters opportunity to advertise content to searchers and let them know exactly what the given page has with regard to what they’re looking for.”

And in 21 Essential SEO Tips & Techniques, Search Engine Land says;

“The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing.”

Even if the keyword you use in the meta description doesn’t help in search rankings, it still might help in getting a searchers attention. So be sure your meta description uses the keywords you are targeting, and it is written in a way that will encourage searchers to click on that result.

Tip #5: Unique Body Content

Content is king online. For a long time search engine specialists have warned their clients about the dangers of duplicate content. If that is done, your website will get hurt. Having unique content will always be preferred by Google.

The more unique your content is the more attention it will get from the users checking it out. Quality based content will keep visitors at your site much longer hence the chance of you being contacted, or the chance of sold out your products or services will definitely increase. It will also help the search engines to index your site better than before. Therefore the importance of unique contents for you site is a matter not to be taken lightly.

Thus research the websites that your competitors who have achieved high page rank, and see what sites are linking to them, if possible, contact those websites to see if you can have a link as well. Or you can also get backlinks from article directory submissions, press release submissions, blog comment postings etc.
