After a year in which the performance marketing industry had to deal with controversies ranging from Oprah to the FTC, many of the larger, smarter networks are trying to move to higher ground. They’re seeking to attract more quality and brand advertisers.

Hydra Networks has announced that with immediate effect it has terminated the accounts of over 15,000 publishers. The news comes as part of a new push by Hydra to attract mainstream brand advertisers and set themselves apart from “ad networks peddling nutraceutical diet remedies, cash grant opportunities, tooth whiteners and other non-branded campaigns of low consumer value.” according MThink

This rush to quality on the part of one of the biggest networks around can be seen as a new stratification of the performance marketing industry. At the high end we are likely to see more big, invitation-only networks focusing on serving major brands. At the lower end we are going to see a bunch of CPA networks scrabbling to sell the slew of new make-money-online products from various online marketing gurus as publishers and networks look to make up for lost rebill income.

Rebill offers provided many with massive returns for little effort, but have been followed by a matching contraction in the marketplace as the credit card companies and the FTC have clamped down. It’s no secret that many of the CPA networks that sprang up in the last 12 months are now in trouble.

The offers they were running last year became commoditized with the result that the networks had to chase traffic volume via ever-increasing publisher payouts. Margins got squeezed, more networks entered the fray, and then the FTC came calling. For some, the last few months have been a great time to catch up on their tan in Costa Rica while waiting for the fuss to die down.

But Hydra is making a clear statement that they want to be seen as the leaders at the other end of the market. Our view is that this is the right approach for the industry. You may remember Jason Calacanis upsetting a few people at the Affiliate Summit a couple of years back with his statement that affiliate marketers needed to stop thinking small.

He’s been proved right. The industry made a few quick bucks, but many of those gains have been lost again.

If you are using GoDaddy for your domain registration, the price will increase soon.

On July 1, 2010, VeriSign®, the registry for .COM and .NET, will increase prices – .COM will go up 7%, and .NET by 10%.

The increase will be passed to registrars like Go Daddy and then, unfortunately, to their consumers as well.

As of July 1, GoDaddy will be forced to raise registration and renewal prices for these two popular top-level domains.

According to GoDaddy, if you wish to avoid this price increase, you can renew your domain names by June 30 and add another year to your current expiration dates.

I have been away to China for while during the Chinese New Year festival, that’s why you didn’t receive our MBA bi-week newsletter in the past few weeks, now I am back in town and welcome to our March 1st edition.

In this week’s MBA Digest, you’ll read some of my pondering about my China trip, together with some updating.

If you are one of these people who wants to make his/her own online business work, even if you aren’t making a lot of money right now, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it, so don’t give up. Making some tough decisions and investing wisely is going to be the key to your business growth. Living in a world of extreme overwork (it is typical case in China), little pay and no life is NOT the way to climb your way to the top.

What I mean is that when you do things, if you didn’t see the results right way, don’t be so hard on yourself, lower your expectations on quantity and your output in quality will improve, and it is really quality that matters.

As I see lot of people start their business with the idea that they can “take their passion and make it a business”. As long as it goes, it is true in some cases but however not in all. Like some marketers don’t readily spend money, if you are not ready to spend money, how can you make money then? So if you find yourself in this situation, you might want to consider how you can turn your market into consumers or consider other options.

If you need to rethink your market, do remember do your homework first.

Beside that, one of the biggest things that can hold you back in the business is clinging to a scarcity mentality, so to NOT GET yourself trap into that pattern, think abundantly and associate with abundant thinkers, surround yourself with them. If you associating with those who has a scarcity mindset, it can be very draining and your dream will not go anywhere.
